Strong Vacation Plans for the Affluent
A survey of affluent Americans conducted by the American
Affluence Research Center showed an increase in intent to
travel on vacation by this group both domestically and
internationally this year. In this report, affluents are
defined as having a minimum net worth of $750,000. For
purposes of the study, an index of 100 is considered to be
neutral, with below being negative and above being
positive. The domestic vacation index has increased to 126
from 105 last spring. The international index is at 97, up
from 71 a year ago. Fifteen percent of those surveyed
expect to take at least one cruise during the next month,
which has not consequentially varied over the past five
surveys. This group makes up about a third of the total
cruise market. Respondents were asked how they usually
learn about new places to vacation. The top three were
worth of mouth (53%), travel articles (38%) and the
Internet (27%). Travel agents were mentioned by only 8%
and those 8% were more affluent than the rest. For more
information, visit www.affluenceresearch.org.
